Platinum, MAPPING THE UNIVERSE TO UNDERSTAND ITS ORIGIN, 14/03/2016

We live in an expanding universe: galaxies, clusters of hundreds of billions of stars similar to the Milky Way of which our sun is part, they seem as to be stuck on the surface of a balloon that continues to swell inexorably over time. Recently, in 1998, it was discovered that the speed of this expansion is increasing: the universe is accelerating, instead of slowing down as one might have expected. This discovery has defined the current standard cosmological model, based on the theory of Einstein’s general relativity.

Una proposta che vale quasi due milioni di euro. È il progetto “DARKLIGHT – Illuminating dark energy with the next generation of cosmological redshift surveys”, presentato da Luigi Guzzo, astronomo dell’INAF – Osservatorio Astronomico di Brera in risposta al bando 2011 dell’ERC (European Research Council), organo dell’Unione Europea che si occupa di finanziare una parte della ricerca scientifica, e che gli ha permesso di vincere un advanced grant da un milione e 700.000 euro.

NATURE, “A test of the nature of cosmic acceleration using galaxy redshift distortions”, 07/12//2007

Observations of distant supernovae indicate that the Universe is now in a phase of accelerated expansion1, 2 the physical cause of which is a mystery3. Formally, this requires the inclusion of a term acting as a negative pressure in the equations of cosmic expansion, accounting for about 75 per cent of the total energy density in the Universe. The simplest option for this ‘dark energy’ corresponds to a ‘cosmological constant’, perhaps related to the quantum vacuum energy.
